Pole Vault Safety
By Jan Johnson Part of the process of learning to pole vault is learning to manage risk. It should be a big part of any pole vault education program. The five basic elements of risk management are (1) controlling the environment, (2) developing good basic skills, (3) making adjustments for consistency, (4) understanding the basic concepts of pole vaulting, and (5) supervision.
The History of the Pole Vault
By Jan Johnson, Russ VerSteeg and Ray Kring. No authoritative evidence proves that any ancient cultures pole vaulted competitively prior to the Tailteann games of ancient Ireland (1829 B.C.). However, artistic representations and other archaeological remains indicate that as early as 2500 B.C. people used long poles for a number of activities, such as farming, boating and warfare.

Winter 2007 / American Track & Field. Transcribed, edited and footnotes added by Nobuya "Nobby" Hashizume, who wrote: Many people feel that Arthur Lydiard was a man who knew everything there is to know about running. He could help anyone, in any part of the world, run faster and farther because of his understanding of the "hows" and "whys" of training.
