The 2006 IAAF World Athlete of the Year, Sanya Richards is
now the only American alive in the hunt for the Golden
League Jackpot after winning the women's 400 meters
Friday at the fourth meeting of the six fixture series, the
Weltklasse Z&rich in Switzerland. Athletes must win at
all six meetings of the IAAF Golden League series to claim a
share of the $1,000,000 Jackpot. 2005 World Outdoor silver medalist Sanya Richards
destroyed the field in the women's 400m, winning in a
world-leading 49.36 seconds. Novlene Williams of Jamaica
was a distant second in 50.85 while reigning World
champion Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain was fourth in
51.32 and Mary Wineberg was sixth in 51.53.
2006 NCAA 100m and 400m champion Xavier Carter stole
the show in the men's 200m, winning in 19.92 seconds
ahead of 2007 World Outdoor silver medalist Usain Bolt of
Jamaice, who took second in 20.19. J.J. Johnson finished
fourth in 20.49 while Rodney Martin was fifth in 20.53.
Reigning World Outdoor 1,500m and 5,000m champion
Bernard Lagat continued his winning ways today in the
men's 3,000m. Lagat ran with the lead pack, covering the
first 1,000m in 2:32.36. He moved into the lead with 400m to
go, briefly losing it at the 200 meter-to-go mark to Edwin
Cheruiyot of Kenya, and then regaining it on the final stretch
to claim victory in 7:38.78. Matt Tegenkamp, who took fourth
place in the 5,000m at the 2007 World Championships, was
eighth in 7:54.44.
In the women's 100m, 2003 World champion Torri Edwards
shot out of the blocks and into the lead, but could not hang
on and crossed the line in 11.22 for second place behind
France's Christine Arron (11.17). 2007 World Outdoor
bronze medalist Carmelita Jeter took third in 11.24. Other
American finishers were 2006 World Indoor 60m champion
Lisa Barber (6th - 11.32) and 2007 World Outdoor silver
medalist Lauryn Williams (7th - 11.34).
The men's 110m hurdles were stacked with Americans.
Two-time Olympic and World Outdoor silver medalist
Terrence Trammell took second in 13.22 with 1996 Olympic
gold medalist and four-time world champion Allen Johnson
third in 13.23. Other Americans in the race include Anwar
Moore (4th - 13.24), Ryan Wilson (5th - 13.33), David Oliver
(6th - 13.37), 2007 World Outdoor bronze medalist David
Payne (7th - 13.39) and Aries Merritt (8th - 13.42).
In the women's 100m hurdles, two-time World champion
Michelle Perry took third in 12.68, knocking her out of
contention for the Golden League Jackpot. 2007 U.S. Indoor
champion Lolo Jones was fifth in 12.81.
On the field, 2007 World Outdoor bronze medalist Walter
Davis won the men's triple jump with a hop, skip and a leap
of 17.20 meters/56 feet 5.25 inches. 2007 U.S. champion
Aarik Wilson was third with 17.11m/56-1.75.
Also on the field, 2007 World champion Brad Walker was
fourth in the men's pole vault with his clearance of
5.65m/18-6.5 and 2007 World Outdoor bronze medalist
Breaux Greer took third in the men's javelin with his heave of
83.15m/272-9.
