Americans Win in Zagreb

Americans Stephanie Durst, Mike Hazle, Allen Johnson (photo/US Outdoor Champs 06), and Jason Smoots won their respective events Thursday at the Zagreb 2006 meeting in Zagreb, Croatia.

1996 Olympic gold medalist and four-time World champion Allen Johnson won the men's 110-meter hurdles in 13.19 seconds. David Oliver crossed the line in 13.23 for third while Aubrey Herring was fifth and Ron Bramlett sixth, both in 13.50.

Two-time NCAA DII champion Jason Smoots edged out Olympic silver medalist Francis Obikwelu of Portugal to win the men's 100 meters, as they both clocked in at 10.22 seconds. On the women's side, 2006 U.S. 100-meter hurdles champion Ginnie Powell crossed the line in 11.35 seconds for third place in the women's 100 meters.

Other winners include Mike Hazle, who took sixth place at the 2006 U.S. Championships, won the men's javelin throw with his heave of 76.33 meters/250 feet 5 inches. Stephanie Durst won the women's 200 meters in 22.95 seconds.

Olympic 4x400m gold and 400m bronze medalist Derrick Brew was third in the men's 400 meters, crossing the line in 46.11 seconds, while Olympic 4x400m gold medalist Dee Dee Trotter came in second in the women's 400 meters in 50.88. Stephanie Spence was sixth in 53.67.

Also in Zagreb, after two false starts in the women's 100-meter hurdles, 2004 Olympic gold medalist Joanna Hayes was third in 12.85 seconds. 2005 World Outdoor silver medalist James Carter was third in the men's 400m hurdles in 49.35 and 2005 U.S. champion Kristin Heaston was third in the women's shot put with her toss of 17.16 meters/56 feet 3.75 inches. Three-time Olympian Amy Acuff took fifth in the women's high jump with her clearance of 1.90m/6- 2.75, six-time U.S. runner-up Suzy Powell was seventh in the discus with her throw of 60.88m/199-9 and 2005 U.S. champion Miguel Pate was fourth in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.56m/24-9.75. Rodney Martin, who took third at the 2006 U.S. Championships, was third in the men's 200m in 20.69.
