Track Profile Report: 2006 World Cup Preview
By Bob Ramsak September 15, 2006 From Track Profile Report #562 Sponsored in part by American Track and Field
Brief updates:
Marion Jones, the two-time defending World Cup champion,
decided to bring an end to her season, and passed on her
team spot in the 100 meters. She will be replaced by Torri
Edwards (photo), who displayed her strong late
season form with
her 11.06 runner-up finish at last weekend's World Athletics
Final, where she finished second.Notable doubles:
Saif Saaeed Shaheen will end his summer season with a
difficult 5000/steeplechase double. In the 5000, he's set to
face Kenenisa Bekele, and in the steeplechase, he'll take
on Kenyan Paul Kipsiele Koech, currently the event's No. 2. Sanya Richards, the world's dominant force in the 400, will
also contest the 200. In the latter, she lowered her personal
best to 22.17 last weekend at the World Athletics Final,
where she finished second to Allyson Felix. Look for more reports/features throughout the weekend
from Athens.
