Alistair Cragg, Kim Smith, and Pat Henry are the United States
Track Coaches Association (USTCA) 2004 indoor track and field
award winners. Cragg was named 2004 USTCA Indoor male athlete
of the year, Smith was named 2004 USTCA Indoor female athlete
of the year, and Henry was named 2004 USTCA Indoor Coach of the
Year.
Cragg, a senior at the University of Arkansas, won the 3,000
and 5,000-meter titles at the 2004 NCAA Division I Indoor
Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas March 12-13. He has won
five indoor individual championships and is the second athlete
in NCAA meet history to win both the 3,000m and 5,000m crowns
two consecutive years. In his three years with Arkansas, Cragg
scored 76 NCAA meet points, the most by any Arkansas track
athlete not competing in field events.
Smith, a senior at Providence College, also won the 3,000m
(8:53.54) and 5,000m (15:14.8) titles at the NCAA Division I
Indoor Championships. She broke the NCAA records in each event.
Smith's two first-place finishes accounted for all of
Providence's points, and placed them ninth in the final team
standings. Smith and Amy Rudolph are the only Providence
College runners to win two NCAA titles.
Henry led LSU's men's and women's programs to NCAA Division I
Indoor titles, making LSU the first school in NCAA history to
accomplish the feat. The two championships bring LSU's titles
to 30, including 27 under Henry's direction. In his 17th
season, Henry saw LSU win the men's title with 44.5 points,
while LSU's women won with 52. The Lady Tigers' championship
was their third consecutive indoor title.
