USATF Convention Elections and Awards

Finke, Phillips, Estes Elected LDR Chairs; Roe Returns as USATF President

Bill Roe of Bellingham, Wash. was elected to a second term as USA Track & Field's president, leading a Board of Directors for the next four years whose composition was finalized in elections last Friday, December 3.

Roe, who ran unopposed, was re-elected by acclamation at USATF's 2004 Annual Meeting in Portland, Ore. Roe is the first USATF president to be elected to two four-year terms. Also re-elected by acclamation as an officer was Treasurer Ed Koch. Winning contested elections also on Friday were Lynn Cannon who was elected secretary and incumbent vice president Dee Jensen.

In addition, Fred Finke of Longwood, Fla., was elected USATF's Long Distance Running Chair. Finke defeated Don Lein of Pittsboro, N.C., while Elizabeth Phillips of New York, N.Y. and Jim Estes of Louisville, Ky. were re-elected as women's and men's Long Distance Running (LDR) chairs respectively.

At the 26th Annual USA Track & Field Convention this past weekend, a horde of honors and awards were handed-out and announced. Here are the big winners:

USATF President Bill Roe honored 12 USATF contributors with President's Awards during the 2004 Annual Meeting Opening Session. Below are the honorees:

* Mark Springer - USATF employee since 1986, working in all areas of the sport; currently USATF Director of Grassroots Programs & Planning; long-time Annual Meeting organizer

* Meb Keflezighi - 2004 Olympic men's marathon silver medalist, 10,000m and 20K American record holder

* Deena Kastor - 2004 Olympic women's marathon bronze medalist, 5K, 10,000m, 15K and marathon American record holder, Athletes Advisory Committee contributor

* Kathy Fones - New Mexico Association contributor, youth/junior track & field advocate

* Antonio Pettigrew - Athletes' Advisory Committee officer and Board of Directors member, coach, former U.S. 400m champion and 4x400m relay world record holder, former Visa Humanitarian Athlete of the Year

* Erica Wheeler - Athletes' Advisory Committee officer and Board of Directors member, former U.S. javelin champion

* George Williams - 2004 Olympic Team men's head coach; 1999 World Outdoor Championships, 1993 World Indoor Championships and 1992 IAAF World Cup men's head coach; coach at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C., since 1976

* Mike Frankfurt - Chairman of the Armory Foundation in New York, New York Road Runners Club member, long-time contributor
