New AR for Toomey

Jen Toomey ran an American record in the 1,000m Friday at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham, England.

Toomey ran 2 minutes, 34.19 seconds in placing behind Great Britain's Kelly Holmes (2:32.96). The previous American record of 2:35.29 was set in 2000 by Regina Jacobs in Boston. 2000 Olympic gold 800m medalist Maria Mutola of Mozamibuqe saw her 22-race winning streak come to an end as she clipped the heels of Holmes, fell to the track and did not finish the race.

Cantwell's PB longest American indoor throw since 1989

2003 World Athletics Final champion Christian Cantwell won the shot put Saturday at the Missouri All-Comers meet in Columbia, Missouri, with his throw of 21.95meters/72 feet, 0.25 inches, the best indoor throw in the world since 2000, and the best American throw since 1989.

Cantwell's throw ranks 12th all-time on the indoor world list, and ranks as the fourth best American mark ever.

Cantwell's mark is a personal-best and sets a new University of Missouri Hearnes Fieldhouse record. His previous best of 21.62m/70-11.25 was in Salamanca, Spain in July 2003. Cantwell holds four of the top six indoor throwing distances in the world in 2004, three of which have occurred at Hearnes Fieldhouse.

Raschker named Sullivan Award finalist

Masters legend Phil Raschker has been named a finalist for the 2004 AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, honoring America's top amateur athlete. Raschker, 57, becomes the first track and field athlete over age 40 to be nominated for the award.

The Sullivan Award presentation will be held on April 13 at 6 p.m., at the New York Athletic Club. According to National Masters News, Raschker has won more women's championships on the international and national level than any other masters track and field athlete.

New WR in women's pole vault

Russian Svetlana Feofanova broke the women's indoor pole vault record Sunday with a clearance of 4.85m/15-11 at the Athina 2004 indoor meet in Athens, Greece.

The previous indoor mark was set a week earlier by fellow Russian Yelena Isinbayeva, who cleared 4.83m/15-10.25.

With her performance, Feofanova earned her ninth world record in the last two years.

Coleman, Richardson shine at Simplot Games

2003 Pan American Junior gold medalist Elzie Coleman set a new national indoor high school record Saturday at the 2004 Simplot Games at Idaho State University in Pocatello. Coleman's time of 45.92 seconds bettered the previous record of 46.84 by William Reed in 1986.

Coleman, a senior from Newburgh, N.Y., also anchored his Newburgh HS 4x200m relay team to victory in a Simplot Games record time of 1:27.96.

2003 Verizon Youth Athlete of the Year Jason Richardson, who finished second to Coleman in the 400m, won the 60 meter hurdles in 7.82 seconds. Kevin Craddock was the runner-up in 7.93.

Ashley Owens won the girls' 60m in a national indoor high school record time of 7.16 seconds, bettering the previous record of Owens' former teammate Aleisha Latimer by .08 seconds.

In addition, Leif Arrhenius set indoor national high school and world junior records in the men's weight throw with a heave of 25.18m/82-7.5.
