New AR for Toomey
Jen Toomey ran an American record in the 1,000m Friday at
the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham, England.
Toomey ran 2 minutes, 34.19 seconds in placing behind
Great Britain's Kelly Holmes (2:32.96). The previous
American record of 2:35.29 was set in 2000 by Regina
Jacobs in Boston. 2000 Olympic gold 800m medalist Maria
Mutola of Mozamibuqe saw her 22-race winning streak
come to an end as she clipped the heels of Holmes, fell to
the track and did not finish the race.
Cantwell's PB longest American indoor throw since
1989
2003 World Athletics Final champion Christian Cantwell
won the shot put Saturday at the Missouri All-Comers meet
in Columbia, Missouri, with his throw of 21.95meters/72
feet, 0.25 inches, the best indoor throw in the world since
2000, and the best American throw since 1989.
Cantwell's throw ranks 12th all-time on the indoor world list,
and ranks as the fourth best American mark ever.
Cantwell's mark is a personal-best and sets a new
University of Missouri Hearnes Fieldhouse record. His
previous best of 21.62m/70-11.25 was in Salamanca, Spain
in July 2003. Cantwell holds four of the top six indoor
throwing distances in the world in 2004, three of which have
occurred at Hearnes Fieldhouse.
Raschker named Sullivan Award finalist
Masters legend Phil Raschker has been named a finalist for
the 2004 AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, honoring
America's top amateur athlete. Raschker, 57, becomes the
first track and field athlete over age 40 to be nominated for
the award.
The Sullivan Award presentation will be held on April 13 at 6
p.m., at the New York Athletic Club. According to National
Masters News, Raschker has won more women's
championships on the international and national level than
any other masters track and field athlete.
New WR in women's pole vault
Russian Svetlana Feofanova broke the women's indoor
pole vault record Sunday with a clearance of 4.85m/15-11 at
the Athina 2004 indoor meet in Athens, Greece.
The previous indoor mark was set a week earlier by fellow
Russian Yelena Isinbayeva, who cleared 4.83m/15-10.25.
With her performance, Feofanova earned her ninth world
record in the last two years.
Coleman, Richardson shine at Simplot Games
2003 Pan American Junior gold medalist Elzie Coleman set
a new national indoor high school record Saturday at the
2004 Simplot Games at Idaho State University in Pocatello.
Coleman's time of 45.92 seconds bettered the previous
record of 46.84 by William Reed in 1986.
Coleman, a senior from Newburgh, N.Y., also anchored his
Newburgh HS 4x200m relay team to victory in a Simplot
Games record time of 1:27.96.
2003 Verizon Youth Athlete of the Year Jason Richardson,
who finished second to Coleman in the 400m, won the 60
meter hurdles in 7.82 seconds. Kevin Craddock was the
runner-up in 7.93.
Ashley Owens won the girls' 60m in a national indoor high
school record time of 7.16 seconds, bettering the previous
record of Owens' former teammate Aleisha Latimer by .08
seconds.
In addition, Leif Arrhenius set indoor national high school
and world junior records in the men's weight throw with a
heave of 25.18m/82-7.5.
