Four Top Sprinters Set for Reebok Grand Prix on June 2
April 19, 2007 From press release.
NEW YORK CITY (April 19) - American Lauryn Williams, the
reigning World Champion;
Veronica Campbell of Jamaica, the most successful track
athlete at the 2004 Olympics;
Tyson Gay, the world's current #1 sprinter; and World
Championship silver medalist Wallace
Spearmon will headline the sprint fields at the Reebok
Grand Prix on June 2, organizers
announced today. The third-annual Reebok Grand Prix, named one of the two
top international track-and-field
events in the country, will begin at 5 p.m. on June 2 at the
state-of-the-art Icahn Stadium, on
Randall's Island. Last year, in the final event of the evening,
Ethiopian superstar Meseret Defar
broke the 5000-meter World Record, a feat named the
sport's worldwide Performance of the
Year by a woman. Williams, the 2005 World Champion at 100 meters, also
brought home gold in the 4x100m relay
and is a 2004 Olympic silver medalist. Campbell is a
triple-medalist from those same Olympics,
winning gold at 200 meters and the 4x100m relay and
bronze at 100 meters to become the
winningest female track athlete at the 2004 Games. One of
the most popular athletes in Jamaica,
Campbell is sure to draw huge cheers from her legions of
Jamaican fans in New York. Williams
and Campbell will face off at 100 meters. Gay last season became the world's top 100m-200m
sprinter, ending the year ranked #1 in the
world at 200 meters and #2 at 100 meters and repeating as
World Athletics Final champion at 200,
while his training partner, Spearmon, won the US 200-meter
title and moved up to #3 on the all-time
200 list. Gay will run the 100-meter dash in New York, while
Spearmon will compete at 200 meters. The Reebok Grand Prix, on June 2, is the third stop of USA
Track & Field's Visa Championship
Series. Tickets, at $20, $30 and $40 each are available by
