Portland Grand Prix Meet Cancelled

Following months of rumors, the Oregon Track Classic has been officially cancelled, meet director Paul Banta announced yesterday.

"We regret having to cancel what has been one of the very best track and field meets in the United States," Banta said. "We had hoped to attract a new sponsor to replace long-time sponsor adidas but the timing was less than ideal for 2005." Banta added that other sponsors had expressed interest in helping to finance the 2006 edition. "We are working to have a new title sponsor in place by this summer."

The 15th annual edition of the IAAF Grand Prix II meet had been scheduled for May 14.

"Adidas was a great partner and we appreciate the 11 years of support for the meet," Banta said. "It,s too bad that the sponsorship ended but it creates a new opportunity for the meet so it can continue to bring the very best track and field athletes to the Portland area."

Adidas announced it would no longer sponsor the Portland meet, as well as a few other American competitions, last fall. The Boston Indoor Games, formerly sponsored by Adidas, was sponsored this year by Reebok.
