Cantwell will face a strong challenge from three-time World champion and two- time Olympic medalist John Godina, who won the Payton Jordan U.S. Open on Memorial Day with his best throw in two years of 21.71m/71-2.75. 2000 Olympic silver medalist Adam Nelson and 1999 Pan American Games silver medalist Jamie Beyer are also in the field along with six-time Canadian champion Brad Snyder.

The Verizon men's 100 meters also will be highly competitive as 2003 world outdoor 200m champion John Capel leads a strong field. Capel, who ended last year ranked #1 in the world in both the 100 and 200 meters, will be challenged by World Championships silver medalist Darvis Patton. Coby Miller, Mickey Grimes, Tim Harden and Leonard Scott could also challenge the favorites.

Joey Woody won the silver medal at the World Championships last season, and he heads the field in the Alaska Airlines men's 400m hurdles. Woody, who ended the 2003 campaign ranked #1 in the U.S. and #3 in the world, will be challenged by Fred Sharpe, who placed third at the 2003 NCAA Championships and ended last season ranked #5 in the U.S. 2003 NCAA champion Dean Griffiths of Jamaica also is in the field.

American record holder and 1996 Olympic high jump champion Charles Austin plans to defend his meet title where he will face top competition in the nation as a tune-up for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento. In his hunt for his fourth Olympic team, Austin, who plans to retire after this season, will go head-to-head against defending U.S. indoor and outdoor high jump champion Jamie Nieto, 2001 USA champion Charles Clinger, 2000 USA Indoor champion Matt Hemingway and 2000 Olympian Nathan Leeper. Also in the field, look for Canadian record holder, four-time NCAA champion and two-time world champion Mark Boswell.
