Alan Webb Returns to New Balance Games and Runs Personal Best
January 24, 2007 from press release.
January 20, 2007, New York, NY - Alan Webb, who ran the
only sub 4-minute indoor mile ever by a high school athlete
exactly six years ago today, returned to the 12th annual New
Balance Games at the New Balance Track & Field Center at
the Armory Saturday, January 20, 2007. Webb ran his
personal best indoors and won with a time of 3:56.70. Competing in a strong international field in the Elite Men's
Mile, Webb outran Kenyan Eliud Njubi (3:58.64), Adrian
Blinco (4:00.21) and 2003 New Balance Games champion
Jamie Thie of Wales (4:01.66). "I was excited to run my personal indoor best in this facility,"
said Webb. "Everyone in the building knew my history here.
I knew Eliud (Njubi) was right there and that I needed a
really good kick. I ran 3:59 last week and I'm moving in the
right direction for when I run at the Millrose Games February
2nd." In 2001, as a senior from South Lakes High School in
Reston, Va., Webb became the first American prep runner to
break the four-minute mark for the indoor mile on Saturday,
January 20, 2001, at the New Balance Games. Webb
finished the race with a time of 3:59.86 to smash the
scholastic indoor mark of 4:02.70 set by Thom Hunt in 1976. By crossing the finish line in less than four minutes, Webb
became only the fourth U.S. high schooler to achieve the
feat. The other three, Jim Ryun, Tim Danielson and Marty
Liquori, all accomplished the mark in outdoor races. Liquori
was the last American high school athlete to break
four-minute mark, doing it in 1967.
