TERRE HAUTE, IN - Following the Colorado women's national championship just under an hour earlier, the Colorado men's team matched that with a four point win over Wisconsin at the NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championship held at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course hosted by Indiana State University.

The Buffaloes captured its second-ever NCAA Division I Championship by placing three runners in the Top 25. Brent Vaughn paced Colorado in fourth, finishing the 10K course in a time of 30:49. Bret Schoolmeester was fifth in the race with a time of 30:57. Other Colorado scorers were Jon Severy in 15th with a time of 31:27; Stephen Pifer in 31st with a time of 31:57; and James Strang in 35th with a time of 32:00.

"I couldn't say that I expected to win (both national titles), but I knew that they were in reach," Colorado men's and women's coach Mark Wetmore said. "I thought that with a well-run race the men could finish second and I knew that we needed Wisconsin to make some mistakes. So I guess I would say that the team exceeded my expectations."

Wisconsin was second with three runners in the Top 11, but Colorado's two runners in the Top five was too much to overcome; while Arkansas was third with 202 points, placing three runners in the top 25.

Wisconsin, who came into the national title race ranked #1 in the MONDO Division I Cross Country Poll, finished a close second, scoring 94 points. The Badgers were paced by Simon Bairu who won the Individual National Championship with a time of 30:37.7. The course record held by 2002 National Champion, Jorges Torres, at 29:04.7 was not threatened due to the sloppy course conditions after a steady overnight and early morning rain.

Bairu won the Big Ten Cross Country Championship in each of the last two years, but was coming off a 10th place finish at the Great Lakes Regional Meet. The win is Bairu's first-ever NCAA title, Wisconsin's third -- its first since 1985.

"The plan was to stick with the front pack for much of the race. I knew someone was going to try to make a move about the halfway mark. I just wanted to stick with whoever was there and then make one big push with 1K to go," Bairu said. "Coming down the stretch I was too scared to look back to see who was behind me or how close they were. I'm just so happy with the way I ran and I still can't believe I won today."

Individually, Matt Gonzales of New Mexico was second with a time of 30:40.9. Arkansas' Josphat Boit was third with a mark of 30:41.8.

This year marks the second time that the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships have been hosted by Indiana State University, with the first in 2002. The event will return to the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in both 2005 and 2006.
