New York, NY - Hayley Tullet (GBR), came into the 2006 New Balance Games as a former two-time champion (2003/04), having been hampered by a sciatic nerve problem for 18 months, but left the city's famous Armory Track and Field Center on Saturday (21) delighted with a good Mile win over defending champion, Carmen Douma-Hussar of Canada.

With pace maker, veteran Alisa Harvey hitting even splits of 66.1, 2:12.6 before departing the race, Canadian Commonwealth Games hope Douma-Hussar was left out-front. However, Tullet was waiting to unleash her sprint and after hearing the famous Armory announcer, Ian Brooks say "100m to go", Hayley thought, "you know, it is 100 metres to; start sprinting now, what you've got is what you've got."

Tullet, the 2003 World 1500m bronze medallist outdoors, who will run the Commonweath Games for Wales in March, passed Douma-Hussar, the 2004 World Indoor 1500m silver medallist, on the home straight and won in 4:29.23. She felt, "I wanted to run everything within myself. I didn't want to struggle at any point. I just wanted to have a smooth race and run tactically well."

In the men's Mile, two-time defending New Balance Games champion Elkanah Angweyi and fellow Kenyan, Godfrey Rono requested a 1:57 half way split. British 1500m Commonwealth Games select, Andy Baddeley passed 800m in 2:01, while Angwenyi followed slowly in 2:03.8. Badderly, 23 a former Cambridge University student passed 1200 metres in 3:02, setting-up a furious finish, which Angwenyi won comfortably in 3:57.47. Elkanah is hoping for Kenyan selection to the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Moscow.
