Mile Legend Leslie MacMitchell Dies

Leslie MacMitchell, one of the top U.S. milers in the 1940s, has passed away at the age of 85. Here are some of his accomplishments:

* Set a National H.S. Indoor Record of 4:28.6 in the mile at NY's Armory while attending George Washington H.S.

* Equalled the World Indoor Record of 4:07.4 in the mile in 1941. The NY Times hailed him as "the man who is going to run the mile in four minutes".

* NYU grad was the IC4A Indoor and Outdoor Mile Champion 3 years in a row (1940-1942). Also won the Indoor 1/2-mile in 1941.

* 1941 NCAA Mile Champion

* 2-time U.S. Outdoor Champion in the 1500-meters (1941,1946)

* 1941 Sullivan Award winner, presented to the best amateur athlete in the U.S.

* 2-time winnner of the Wanamaker Mile (1942,1946)
