Wins in the 400 meters by Sanya Richards and Jeremy Wariner, and hurdle wins by Michelle Perry and James Carter highlighted American finishes Tuesday evening at Athletissima 2005, the IAAF Super Grand Prix meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. Another world record by Yelena Isinbayeva in the women's pole vault led other performances.

Already the 2005 world leader in the women's 400 meters, Sanya Richards dealt Olympic gold medalist Tonique Darling of Bahamas her first loss of the year. The 20-year-old, two-time U.S. champion powered away in the final 100 meters to win in 49.96 seconds, with Darling second in 50.14.

Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner led a 1-3-4 finish by Americans in the men's 400. The two-time U.S. champion ran 44.96, slowing in the final 10 meters, to win over Chris Brown over Canada (45.02), 2003 World Outdoor silver medalist Tyree Washington (45.37) and Olympic bronze medalist Derrick Brew (45.50).

U.S. outdoor champion Michelle Perry continued her hot streak in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a win in 12.61 seconds. Anjanette Kirkland, the 2001 world outdoor champion, was second in 12.65 seconds.

Two-time Olympic 400m hurdler James Carter won the hurdles single- lap race in Lausanne, his time of 48.48 putting him ahead of runner-up Louis Van Zyl of South Africa (48.82).

Olympic silver medalist Lauryn Williams posted a new personal-best in the 100 meters, placing second in Lausanne to Chandra Sturrup of Bahamas. Williams clocked 10.91 seconds, which improves upon her PR of 10.96 set at the 2004 Olympic finals. Sturrup won in 10.84.

Two-time Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammell narrowly missed a win in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Although he matched Olympic gold medalist and co-world record holder Liu Xiang's time of 13.05 in Tuesday's race, Liu was given the win in a photo-finish. American Dominique Arnold was third in 13.26, with Ron Bramlett fourth in 13.31.

Olympic gold medalist Justin Gatlin suffered an upset, placing third in the men's 100 meters behind Frenchman Ronald Pognon (9.99) and Aziz Zakari of Ghana (10.02). Gatlin was third in 10.03.

In her first outdoor meet of the year, Russian Yelena Isinbayeva broke her own world record in the women's pole vault with her clearance of 4.93m/16-2. It is the seventh outdoor world record for Isinbayeva, who has broken the indoor WR an equal number of times. American record holder Stacy Dragila, continuing her comeback from injury, was second at 4.60m/15-1.
