Bernard Lagat on Sunday achieved what most felt was simply a matter of time: he broke Sydney Maree's American record in the men's 1,500 meters.

The 30-year-old Lagat ran 3:29.30 to win the 1,500 meters Sunday in Rieti, Italy, at the final IAAF Grand Prix meet of the summer. His time breaks Maree's AR of 3:29.77, set in Cologne on August 25, 1985, and is the fastest time in the world in 2005.

Lagat easily won in Rieti, with Antar Zerguelaine of Algeria second in 3:32.00 and American Alan Webb third in a personal best 3:32.52.

In other top American results from Rieti, Brad Walker (5.96m/19-6.75 personal best, 2005 U.S. leader) and Derek Miles (5.81m/19-0.75) went 1-2 in the men's pole vault, Sandra Glover (53.92) and Sheena Johnson (54.73) went 1-2 in the women's 400m hurdles, Anthony Famiglietti was second in the men's steeplechase (8:19.46), Moushaumi Robinson placed second in the women's 400 (51.40), and Tyson Gay was second in the men's 100 (10.08). Lindsay Gallo ran a 2005 U.S. leader in the women's 1,500m with 4:05.75.
