Appearing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Greek sprinters
Konstantinos Kenteris and Ekaterina Thanou today accepted that they
had breached anti-doping rules when the pair missed tests prior to and
during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, the sport's world governing
body announced today. Pending the outcome of their appeal to the CAS, Kenteris and Thanou,
the 2000 Olympic 200 meter gold and 100 meter silver medallists
respectively, were provisionally suspended by the IAAF on December
22, 2004, and will be re-eligible to compete on December 22 of this
year. The pair were initially cleared by SEGAS, the Greek federation, in late
March. Calling the decision "erroneous," the IAAF appealed the decision
to the CAS, whose rulings in sports arbitration cases is final. They were officially charged with missing three tests between July 27
and August 12 and for failing to provide a urine and blood sample on
August 12. In the widely-publicized case at the time, the pair claimed
they missed their tests due to a motorcycle accident.
