Russian Yelena Isinbayeva broke the world indoor pole vault record for
the second time in a week Friday at the Norwich Union Grand Prix
meeting in Birmingham, England.Isinbayeva cleared the new height of 4.88meters/16 feet, with her
second attempt after narrowly missing with her initial effort. Isinbayeva,
who raised the world indoor standard to 4.87m/15-11.75 in Donetsk last
Saturday, posted the 12th world record of her career. The 22-year-old
opened at 4.60m/15-1, cleared 4.79m/15-8.50 with her second jump of
the day and then raised the bar to 4.87m/15-11.75, which she cleared
with her second attempt. She set the new world record on her second
attempt after barely missing on her first try.
2003 world champion Svetlana Feofanova was second in Birmingham
with a season's best clearance of 4.70m/15-5.
Americans performing well in Birmingham included 2005 Millrose
Games winner Leonard Scott, who won the men's 60 meters in a
personal best time of 6.49 seconds. Other Americans in that race
included world record holder Maurice Greene (3rd-6.54) and last week's
Powered by Tyson Invitational winner Jason Smoots (4th-6.58).
2004 world indoor gold medalist Savante' Stringfellow was the runner-
up in the men's long jump with a best of 7.83m/25-8.25, and two-time
Olympic bronze medalist Melissa Morrison-Howard was the runner-up
in the women's 60m hurdles with a season's best time of 7.99 seconds.
In other action, Jamaica's Davian Clarke won the men's 400 meters in
45.90 seconds, followed by Americans Jerry Harris (2nd-46.11) and
James Davis (3rd-46.56). All three performances were seasonal bests.
