Russian Yelena Isinbayeva broke the world indoor pole vault record for the second time in a week Friday at the Norwich Union Grand Prix meeting in Birmingham, England.

Isinbayeva cleared the new height of 4.88meters/16 feet, with her second attempt after narrowly missing with her initial effort. Isinbayeva, who raised the world indoor standard to 4.87m/15-11.75 in Donetsk last Saturday, posted the 12th world record of her career. The 22-year-old opened at 4.60m/15-1, cleared 4.79m/15-8.50 with her second jump of the day and then raised the bar to 4.87m/15-11.75, which she cleared with her second attempt. She set the new world record on her second attempt after barely missing on her first try.

2003 world champion Svetlana Feofanova was second in Birmingham with a season's best clearance of 4.70m/15-5.

Americans performing well in Birmingham included 2005 Millrose Games winner Leonard Scott, who won the men's 60 meters in a personal best time of 6.49 seconds. Other Americans in that race included world record holder Maurice Greene (3rd-6.54) and last week's Powered by Tyson Invitational winner Jason Smoots (4th-6.58).

2004 world indoor gold medalist Savante' Stringfellow was the runner- up in the men's long jump with a best of 7.83m/25-8.25, and two-time Olympic bronze medalist Melissa Morrison-Howard was the runner-up in the women's 60m hurdles with a season's best time of 7.99 seconds. In other action, Jamaica's Davian Clarke won the men's 400 meters in 45.90 seconds, followed by Americans Jerry Harris (2nd-46.11) and James Davis (3rd-46.56). All three performances were seasonal bests.
