Monte-Carlo - The most significant change in the latest
edition of the IAAF World Rankings came in the Road
Running - Marathon Event Ranking. Following a month's
absence, Olympic bronze medallist Deena Drossin-Kastor
returned to fourth place after finishing sixth in the ING New
York City Marathon over the past weekend. The U.S. runner clocked 2:27:54 (1180 points) but was
unable to reclaim her leading position in the Ranking from
four weeks ago. In the Women's Overall Rankings the
33-year-old entered in the 100th place.
The other significant improvements on the women's side
this week came from Tetyana Hladyr (UKR) and Catherine
Ndereba (KEN), who placed second and third respectively in
New York. Hladyr finished in 2:26:05 (1253 points) and
moved into 18th place, while Ndereba could not repeat her
win from Boston last year and had to settle for third in
2:26:58 (1222 points). The third place allowed the Kenyan to
move into 14th place, while her compatriot, Susan
Chepkemei dropped from 4th to 7th, as she was unable to
back up her second place from the 2005 New York
Marathon.
On the men's side, Marilson Gomes Dos Santos was the
surprise winner in New York with 2:09:58 (1276 points). The
Brazilian re-entered the Road Running - Marathon Event
Ranking in 38th place, while last year's runner up, Hendrick
Ramaala (RSA) failed to back up his silver medal and
slipped to 11th spot in the Ranking.
Other newcomers include a trio of Kenyan runners with
results achieved from races on three different continents.
Stephen Kiogora finished second to Gomes Dos Santos in
New York with 2:10:06 (1254 points) and entered the
Ranking in 31st place, while his compatriot Philip Manyim
placed third at the Seoul JoongAng Marathon in Korea with
2:09:35 (1228 points) and entered the Ranking in 35th,
while Peter Kiprotich is in 41st place this week after
finishing 4th at the Frankfurt Marathon with 2:10:57 (1190
points).
