The penultimate TDK Golden League meeting of the season in Brussels
last Friday, stirred up the IAAF World Rankings quite a bit. There were
changes to the top position in six events over the past week, although
Allen Johnson and Sergey Makarov are only tied for first place in their
respective Event Rankings.Justin Gatlin is the Olympic and World 100m champion, however until
this week he was ranked number two in the World behind Asafa Powell
of Jamaica. While Powell does not have the silverware to compete with
Gatlin's, he certainly has some quick times to his name. 9.77 - 9.84 -
9.84 - 9.85 - 9.87, and a 9.98 from last year's World Athletics Final are
his top six performances. Furthermore, the only time he has lost, if we
count completed races, was to Gatlin in Eugene, where he still ran 9.84
seconds! Nevertheless, Gatlin - who himself has only lost two finals this
season - Lausanne and Doha - has now moved to the top after winning
in Brussels with 9.99 (1389 points). Powell, who is currently injured, now
lies second in the Ranking.
At the same time the 23-year-old dropped back to 3rd in the Men's
Overall Rankings, as Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele overtook him for
second place. Bekele was already leading the 5000 - 10,000m Event
Ranking, and therefore had no place to move up to, but his World
10,000m record in Brussels (26:17.53 - 1526 points) ranks as the
second best performance ever outside of the Olympic Games and World
Championships.
Another Olympic champion who is back on top this week is Yuriy
Borzakovskiy. The Russian won the 800m in Brussels with 1:44.54
(1355 points) to overtake previous leader Wilfred Bungei of Kenya,
while Bahrain's Youssef Saad Kamel also improved one place to 4th, as
he finished second to Borzakovskiy in 1:44.58 (1329 points).
Only a week ago Veronica Campbell dethroned France's Christine
Arron in the Women's 100m Event Ranking, but this week the European
record holder is back on top, a single point ahead of her Jamaican rival,
as Arron won in Brussels in 10.97 (1371 points). Olympic champion
Yuliya Nesterenko of Belarus re-entered the top-10 in 9th place, after
finishing 3rd in the Belgian capital with 11.13 (1293 points).
While Arron improved a place in the Women's 100m, she dropped one
position in the 200m Event Ranking. Belgium's Kim Gevaert swapped
positions with her, after placing 2nd in Brussels with 22.99 (1298
points), which means she is now 3rd behind leader Allyson Felix (USA)
and Olympic champion Campbell.
