Trey Hardee, a junior at the University of Texas, set a new collegiate record in the decathlon, tallying 8,465 points at the Texas Relays on Wednesday and Thursday.

The 22-year-old native of Birmingham, Ala., set personal bests in seven of the ten events, to elevate himself to the No. 8 spot in the event among Americans. Hardee's score surpassed the previous collegiate best of 8,463 points, set by Tom Pappas in 1999.

Hardee added more than 400 points to his previous personal best of 8,041, set at the 2004 NCAA Championships where he was second.

"(Setting the record) really wasn't on my mind coming into this weekend," Hardee said in a press release. "I just wanted to get my NCAA automatic-qualifying mark out of the way. As the events progressed and the day went on, I realized I had a shot at the record, and I got it."

Hardee missed a considerable amount of training after injuring his ankle at the NCAA indoor championships last month, and hadn't completed his first work out until just nine days before competition in the decathlon began.

"I have just been taking it day-by-day and rehabbing it," Hardee said. "I just started doing some of the events again last week. I hadn't touched a pole for pole vault, hadn't thrown a javelin or a disc for a while. This was just supposed to be a meet to see where we were at, but it worked out."

Reflecting on his performance, Hardee said, "It hasn't really sunk in for me yet. It almost just feels like a really good practice."

Hardee's teammate, Donavan Kilmartin, finished second, with 7,897 points.
