World Record Worth $25,000 at Boston Indoor Meet
January 20, 2005 From Event Press Release
BOSTON, MA - Top athletes at the Reebok Boston Indoor
Games on Jan. 29 could be in for a big payday. A World Record on the
track will be worth a $25,000 bonus and an American record will be
good for an extra $10,000, meet organizers announced today. Since the inaugural event in 1996, the meet has played host to three
World Records, nine American Records and six other National Records.
Several of those record-holders return for the 2005 event, including
American indoor record-holder Tim Broe at 3000 meters going up
against the World Record-holder at 5000 and 10,000 meters, Kenenisa
Bekele of Ethiopia. David Krummenacker, who thrilled the crowd when
he set the American record for 1000 meters here in 2002, is back to see
what he can do three years later. They join a star-studded lineup that includes 2004 Olympic medalists
Kenenisa Bekele, Carolina Kluft, Jolanda Ceplak, Bernard Lagat,
Melissa Morrison-Howard, DeeDee Trotter, Meseret Defar, Tirunesh
Dibaba, Ejegayehu Dibaba, and Adam Nelson. There's another bonus at stake, as well. As the initial stop in USA Track
& Field's Visa Championship Series, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games
will be the first chance for athletes to compete for the title of Visa
Champion, which will go to the top performer of the four-event series.
The male and female Visa Champion will share a $50,000 jackpot, and
each will receive a trip for two to a premiere Visa-sponsored event of
their choice, including the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Kentucky Derby,
Pebble Beach Weekend or Tony Awards. The 10th-annual Reebok Boston Indoor Games will be held at the
Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College,
1350 Tremont St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 29, and will be broadcast
on ESPN from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 30.
