INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Toby Stevenson has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after turning in a world-leading mark in the pole vault Saturday at the 63rd Coca-Cola Modesto Relays in Modesto, California.

The 2004 U.S. Indoor pole vault champion, Stevenson cleared 6.00 meters/19 feet, 8.25 inches to set a new personal record, win the competition, and become only the second American in history to clear 6 meters.

An NCAA champion while at Stanford University, Stevenson, 27, joined American record holder Jeff Hartwig in the U.S. 6-meter club.

Other world-leading performances turned in by U.S. athletes over the weekend included: nine-time 100m hurdles champion Gail Devers running 12.50 seconds to win the 100m hurdles at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston; 2003 World Indoor and Outdoor champion Dwight Phillips jumping 8.43m/27-8 in the long jump at Modesto; and Phil McMullen tallying 8,124 points to win the men's decathlon at the Challenge of Atlas & Athena in Berkeley, Calif.

Other notable performances include John Nunn, who improved his personal best and bettered the Olympic 'A' qualifying standard with a 1 hour, 22 minutes, 31 second finish in the 20km race walk at the A. Milkeno Race Walk Competition in Birstonas, Lithuania. The performance makes Nunn the second American to have met the Olympic A standard in the men's 20 km walk.

Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
