INDIANAPOLIS - Briana Shook has been named USA Track &
Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the
women's 3,000m steeplechase Saturday at the KBC Night of Athletics
meet in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium. Shook, of Toledo, Ohio, ran 9 minutes, 29.32 seconds to better the
previous American record of 9:39.335 set by Ann Gaffigan at the
Olympic Trials. Other notable performances include, Kenneth Hall broke a national high
school record to win the young men's triple jump at the 38th USATF
Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. A Baton
Rouge, La., native Hall leaped 16.72m/54-10.25 on his third attempt to
break the previous high school triple jump record of 16.44m/53-11.25
set by Greg Yeldell (E. Spencer, N.C.) at the 1998 World Junior
Championships in Annecy, France. 2003 Pan Am Junior 5,000m gold medalist, Galen Rupp broke the
American junior and U.S. high school 5,000m record in 13 minutes,
37.91 seconds in Heusden. Rupp, a Portland, Ore., native bettered the
high school record of 13:44.00 set in 1964 by Gerry Lindgren of
Spokane, Wash. He also bettered the American junior record of
13:38.39 set in 2001 by Franklyn Sanchez of Georgetown University. Another impressive performance was turned in by reigning World Indoor
and Outdoor champion and 2004 Olympic Trials long jump winner
Dwight Phillips who soared to a career-best and world-leading mark for
the year with a first round leap of 8.60 meters/28 feet, 2.75 inches.
Phillips surpassed the 28-foot barrier for the first time with his winning
effort Monday in Linz, Austria. Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is
designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport.
USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on
the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and
results from the previous week. BEST MARKS WEEK ENDING AUGUST 2 MEN 100 - 9.97 Maurice Greene (adidas) - London, ENG 7/30
