INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Sheena Johnson has been named USA
Track &
Field's Athlete of the Week after turning in a world-leading
mark in the women's 400m hurdles Friday at the Pac-10 Track and
Field Championships in Tucson, Arizona. Johnson also posted the
fastest American time of the week in the 100m hurdles.A senior at UCLA, Johnson ran a world-leading time
of 54.32 seconds in the women's 400m hurdles preliminary round
at Pac-10s. She went on to defend her 400m hurdle title on
Saturday in 55.45 seconds. Johnson (Stafford, Va.) also ran a
personal-best time of 12.76 seconds to win the 100m hurdles to
become only the second woman in Pac-10 Conference history to
repeat as 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles champion. In the 400m
hurdles, Johnson is the first-ever four-time champion in the
event and only the third woman in Pac-10 history to win an
individual event all four years. Johnson also ran the second
leg on UCLA's 4x100m relay team to finish first with a Pac-10
meet record time of 43.43 in leading UCLA to its eighth
consecutive Pac-10 women's crown. Another notable performer was Mississippi State
University junior Tiffany McWilliams, who defended both her
2003 SEC Conference 1,500m and 800m titles. She took top honors
in the 1,500m run in an SEC meet record time of 4:09.19. Later
on McWilliams (Red Bay, Ala.), won the 800m in 2:01.96. Both
performances are U.S. leaders. Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week
program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all
levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and
features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based
