INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Maurice Greene has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the Verizon men's 100m Monday at the 2004 Payton Jordan U.S. Open in Stanford, California. The meet will be broadcast Tuesday, June 1 from 9- 10 p.m., Eastern Time on ESPN2.

The 2000 Olympic gold medalist and three-time world outdoor champion blistered the track by running history's second-fastest time under any conditions with his windy 9.78 seconds performance (+3.7 meters per second). His time put him .13 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Justin Gatlin, himself considered an Olympic medal possibility.

Greene, who owns the two fastest wind-legal times in the world this year, won the men's 100m last week at the Home Depot Invitational with a windy (+4.6) time of 9.86 seconds and has returned to his dominant sprinting form that he displayed from 1997-2001.

In other outstanding performances, University of Texas sophomore Sanya Richards broke her own American junior and school record in a world-leading time of 50.49 seconds Friday in the women's 400m during the preliminary round at NCAA Mid-West Regional Championships in College Station, Texas. Richards won Saturday in 50.66 seconds at the Anderson Track and Field Complex, home of the 2004 USA Junior Track & Field Championships.

Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
