Athletes.com Track Team Has Impressive Start to Season
June 1, 2005
From Press Release

The Athletes.com track and field team consisting of Olympians Coby Miller (100, 200), Micah Harris (110H), Jared Rome (discus) and Olympic hopefuls Tracye Lawyer-Thomas (heptathlon, triple jump), Chris Slatt (long jump), Justin St. Clair (javelin), and Corey Nelson (200,400) has been busy early in this 2005 outdoor season.

Tracye Lawyer-Thomas opened up the season March 26th at her Alma Mater Stanford University in the Stanford Invitational with strong performances in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles. Chris Slatt opened his season in the long jump at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersey Invitational at UCLA. In an elite field Slatt jumped a two- year best of 7.70 meters (25 feet, 3 inches) placing second. Joining Slatt at UCLA was Micah Harris who opened up with a victory in the 110- meter high hurdles, which he ran in 13.69 seconds. Harris followed that performance with a third-place finish at the prestigious Mt. Sac relays in Walnut, Calif., with a time of 13.50. 2004 Olympian and U.S. Olympic trials discus champion Jarred Rome opened up his season in La Jolla, Calif., at the UCSD Invitational with the No. 1 throw in the United States and No. 2 throw in the world at 211 feet, 7 inches. Rome then followed that performance with a third-place finish (202 feet, 5 inches) at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersey Invitational and a fourth-place finish (204 feet, 10 inches) at the star-studded Mt. Sac relays April 15- 17.

One of the stars of the Mt. Sac relays was Olympian Coby Miller who ran a 10.08 100m for a second place finish in a field stacked with Olympians and national champions. Boise native Justin St. Clair opened his 2005 season with a throw of 72.19m earning him a third place finish. After an outstanding 2004 season which unfortunately ended with a shoulder injury at the Olympic trials, St. Clair has been rehabbing furiously trying to regain the form that had him ranked #2 in the United States.

Tracye Lawyer-Thomas followed up her Stanford Invite performance with an even better one at the NNU Invitational April 9th in Nampa, Idaho. Thomas took the 100m, triple jump, and long jump crowns. Her triple jump of 42' 5 _ in. was her season best and just a few inches shy of the national qualifying mark. She ran a career best 100m time of 11.58sec., blowing away the field. Thomas continued her roll at the Robison Invitational hosted by BYU in Provo, UT. taking the 100m, 100m hurdles, and long jump titles. She continued to show off her speed running two sub 14 sec 100m hurdle races. Long jumper Chris Slatt took the men's long jump championship.

On April 28th and 29th the historic 96th Drake Relays were run in Des Moines, IA and the Athletes.com track club was well represented. Sprinter Corey Nelson ran his best 200m of the year at 21.00sec taking his first Drake Relays championship. Micah Harris ran a 13.54 earning him a fourth place finish in an absolutely outstanding field. And our athlete of many talents Tracye Lawyer-Thomas competed in the special invitational high jump, long jump and triple jump. She more than held her own jumping 19ft plus in the long jump and 5'8" in the high jump.

At the Penn Relays USA vs. The World, which was held the same weekend as the Drake Relays, Athletes.com's impressive sprinter Coby Miller was a member of the gold medal winning USA Red 4x100 meter relay team. USA Red is currently the world leader in the 4x100 relay.

The track season is in full swing and next up is the ultra competitive Modesto Relays. At Modesto, Jarred Rome took home the first place prize with a 205 ft. discus throw. Nic Petrucci was 4th in the discus with a throw of 195ft. 10in. Our 110m hurdler Micah Harris ran a blistering 13.42 to take home the silver and Corey Nelson's 21.17 was good enough for 6th in the Invitational 200 meters.

At the Adidas Track Classic held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (home of the USA Outdoor Championships), Jarred Rome was excellent once again, winning the discus with a throw of 208ft. 9in. Rome, in a meet in Salinas had two throws over 220ft. 220'9" and 221'9" respectively to give him the 3rd best throw in the world and the 14th best in U.S. history. Nic Petrucci's throw of 196ft. 1in. left him just out of the medals with a 4th place finish. Micah Harris was 5th in the 110m hurdles running a time of 13.55. Javelin thrower Justin St. Clair seems to be getting his form back, he was 4th with a throw of 222ft. 11in.
