The USATF 100K National Team will compete in the 2004
International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 100K World
Cup Under the Patronage of the IAAF in Winschoten,
Netherlands on September 11, 2004. The annual 100K
World Cup race is the one international venue at which USA
Track & Field (USATF) fields an ultra distance team. The
United States will be represented by the USATF 100K Team
of six men and six women ultrarunners. The
twelve-member team will be selected by the USATF
Mountain/Ultra/Trail (MUT), Running Council which was
established in 1998 to help USATF administer ultrarunning
in the United States. 2004 USATF 100K Team Selection Procedures
At the USATF annual convention in Greensboro, North
Carolina in December 2003, the MUT Council chose the
AUA American 100K race from which automatic qualifiers to
the USATF 100K team will be selected. This selection race
will be held on April 4, 2004 in Kettle Moraine, WI. The top
three U.S. men and the top three U.S. women finishers will
be named to the USATF 100K Team provided they meet the
qualifying standards of 8:00 for men or 9:00 for women in
this race.
The remaining members of the team, (three men and three
women plus three alternates each), will be selected by the
MUT Council based on results at other major ultra distance
races, past World Cup events, national and international
racing experience including mountain, road, trail, and track
venues between April 1, 2003 and April 17, 2004. Within this
qualifying period, the primary performance standards for
team eligibility are at the 100K (8:00 for men and 9:00 for
women) and 50 mile (6:00 for men or 7:00 for women)
distances. Initial consideration for team selection will be
given to runners with 100K performances under 7:35 (men)
and 8:45 (women) during the qualifying period.
To be considered for the team, runners must be current
USATF members. Interested athletes may submit running
resumes but resumes are not required to be considered for
the team.
All selected athletes and alternates will be notified on or
before April 30, 2004 with an official team announcement to
follow. Interested athletes who would like more information
