|  Texas Represents 16% of US High School Cross Country Participation March 15, 2004 Madison, WI American Track & Field

would like to
honor Texas for their first-place ranking among all states in
2003 high school cross-country participation with 56,421
participants. Texas also led all states in outdoor high school
track and field participation with 144,482 participants. Based on a study conducted by the National Federation of State
High School Associations (NFHS), Texas was followed by
California, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan. These five states
represented 38% of the entire country's participants. "These figures are great indicators of the strength of our high
school sports system - especially in Texas and California,"
said Larry Eder, ATF Publisher. "Our sport is in good
health
and we have the thousands of volunteer high school coaches to
