New York blocks Texas' bid for a 2003 high school
participation
sweep(Fort Atkinson, WI) - American Track & Field
Magazine would
like to honor New York for their first-place ranking among all
states in 2003 high school indoor track and field participation
with 17,090 participants.
Based on a study conducted by the National Federation of State
High School Associations (NFHS), New York was followed by New
Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia and Maryland. The entire top 10
is as follows:
* Percentage in parenthesis indicates percentage of total
United States participants that the respective state
represents.
New York's victory does something that no other state was able
to do: knock Texas from the top. The Longhorn
state led all states in 2003 high school outdoor track & field
and cross-country.
"The success of America's track and field programs comes from
the grassroots level and New York's participation level is a
great indicator of that," said Larry Eder, ATF Magazine
Publisher.
